ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an absolutely Beautiful and Very Rare Antique Photochrom Print titled “Niagara Falls from Steel Arch Bridge” (as per the Library of Congress Photographs & Prints Division, Washington, D.C. website) by the world famous American Photographer ‘William Henry Jackson’ (American, 1843-1942), published by the Detroit Publishing Co. We have another auction listed of a ‘Set of 2 William Henry Jackson 21 x 17 Photochroms of Niagara Falls’ so please take a look! The digital file for this Photochrom at the L.O.C. website is http://hdl.loc.gov/loc.pnp/det.4a31579. The original negative is in the State Historical Society of Colorado and the original D.P.C. inventory number is #59029. It features the “Maid of the Mist” steamboat at the dock near the American Falls. This Print is Extremely Rare especially in this size and is currently selling for as high as $3550.00 online (http://www.photochrom.com/MAM/59029.html), and this will start well below current market value, so don’t miss this opportunity to add to your William Henry Jackson, Detroit Publishing or Niagara Falls Photographic Collection, and happy bidding!!! The Photochrom is drymounted on a fairly stiff cardboard (done later, probably to prevent further damage), which has printing on the back for a Marine Trust Company, and was most likely drymounted on any old cardboard someone could find. The Photochrom is circa 1900 according to the L.O.C. website, but I believe it could have been possibly shot earlier, since the D.P.C. firm was known as the Detroit Photographic Co. until 1905 when it then became the Detroit Publishing but this image may have been from some of the already-shot negatives that Jackson brought with him when he joined the firm in 1897, of which he added over 10,000 negatives to the bulk of their inventory. I am going to rate this Photochrom in Good Rare+ condition for its age of 108 years+ & rarity despite its few light damage issues (see below). There is No Color Fade. This Photochrom has been in a drawer amongst other prints and photochroms since it was purchased by Walter Meibohm and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time-it’s as beautiful as the day it was printed. The size is 15.75 x 21 (original size 16 x 21 I believe). The piece was trimmed down a bit on the bottom edge and drymounted, so the original copyright info does not show on the piece, but is none-the-less an original Detroit Publishing Photochrom (see L.O.C. URL above, copy/cut/paste into your browser). There is some edge wear all around the four sides with some chipping which extends into the image area up to 1/8” in some spots, and mostly less in the other areas. There is chipping & cardboard-paper-loss on the back of the cardboard itself (separate from the Photochrom) which leads me to believe that as a whole, after the Photochrom was drymounted it may have had a final trim with a very dull blade of some sort or dull commercial paper-cutter, and is not noticeable from the front. A few small light surface scratches here & there in the image area of the Photochrom. Some old creases in the lower left corner and lower right near corner, and some old crescent creases in the image area, but as mentioned before, the piece is drymounted completely down to the cardboard. In the middle right, extending up from the bottom up to about ½ way into the sky & about 2” at it’s widest, there is a very difficult to see light creasy-scrunching affect of the stock (it’s the best way to describe it) which is only noticeable from an angle if held to the light, and was probably a slight result of the possible shrinkage of the piece from the glue maybe???-and it’s not too bad or that noticeable at all, but it did produce a few very small surface scrunch-cracking of the ink in a few spots which aren’t too noticeable either. No Foxing at all on the piece. This Gorgeous and Very Rare Antique William Henry Jackson Photochrom Print of Niagara Falls Has Never Been Framed. About the Artist: William Henry Jackson was probably the most world renowned American landscape photographers of the late 1800’s on through the early 20th Century. His career in photography started in 1858 as a photo retouching artist, and then expanded to photographing the great Territories of the United States. He was the official photographer of the Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden’s, United States Geological Survey of the Territories. He worked in Colorado, traveled to Asia and the Pacific for the World Transportation Commission photographing 24 different countries, worked for 27 years for the Detroit Photographic Company-later becoming the Detroit Publishing Company, and worked through his retirement years 1924-1942 until his death. Jackson’s images made him famous and his legacy survives in collections across the United States, namely; the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Division, The Edison Institute (Known today as the Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan), and the Colorado Historical Society, along with all of the negatives and prints from the Detroit Publishing Company that Jackson had control over at the time of the company’s liquidation in 1932. A lot of servers in the last year or two, have started using new SPAM filters, and there have been a lot of problems with GOOD email not getting through correctly, and being returned as undeliverable. We have had numerous problems this past year communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay.COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early. At this time we only use an 'Auction Style' Listing and Do Not offer a 'Buy it Now' for any of our current listings (unless it is a client commission piece and offered that way as per the client) and we will not stop an auction early to sell any item(s). It would not be fair to the rest of the eBay Worldwide community if we did that. THE HIGHEST BIDDER GETS IT!!!!!Thank you from the Staff at Meibohm Fine Arts, and GOOD LUCK!!!
