Description
A WAR-DATED GENERAL PARSONS LETTER TO NEW YORK GOVERNOR GEORGE CLINTON: “I HAD ENTERTAINED THE HIGHEST OPINION OF HIS ZEALOUS ATTACHMENT TO OUR CAUSE…I CAN NO LONGER ESTEEM HIM A FRIEND TO OUR CAUSE, AND I AM CONVINCED THAT ANY MAN WHO CAN BE GUILTY OF THIS FRAUD IS UNWORTHY OF EVERY TRUST” SAMUEL H. PARSONS (1737‑1789). Parsons was a Continental Army general. He graduated from Harvard and, shortly after Lexington, he enlisted in the Army and fought at Bunker Hill. He was made a Brigadier General and fought at White Plains, commanded West Point and served on the jury that convicted John Andre. ALS. 1pg. 7 ½” x 11”. November 22, 1780. Reading. A scarce war-dated autograph letter signed “Sam H. Parsons” addressed to New York Governor George Clinton in Poughkeepsie, New York. General Parsons wrote “Your Favor of the 6th Inst I received the 19th and will inform Capt Packwood that he is at Liberty to purchase the Flower. In common with Mr. Muirson’s other Friends I had entertained the highest opinion of his Zealous attachment to our cause, but since he was with his father & other relatives, there's reason to suppose he has passed large sums of counterfeit bills of credit knowing them to be false. I fear on examination he will not be able to satisfy his friends of his innocence; if this is true I can no longer esteem him a friend to our cause, and I am convinced that any man who can be guilty of this fraud is unworthy of every trust. I sincerely wish he may give satisfactory proof of his innocence but at present, I have little hope of it. I am with sincere respect your Excellency's Obed. Servt. Sam H. Parsons.” George Clinton (1739-1812) was a Revolutionary War soldier, a seven term Governor of New York, and two-time Vice President under Jefferson and Madison. Heathcote Muirson was a graduate of Yale College; he was the son of a prominent doctor, George Muirson, and loyalist (thus, Parsons’s mention of his father and relatives), but he sided with the patriots. He died on July 27, 1781 from wounds received in battle. The American Book Prices Current shows only five war-dated Parsons letters ever selling at auction. Parsons had been appointed Major General only a month before this letter. The address panel is also accomplished in Parsons’s handwriting. There is a red wax seal on back with slight show through to the front and a thin mounting remnant to the verso. The letter has dark writing and is in fine condition.
