Description
Rare Antique Dicksee Etching French Bulldog (or Boston Bull or Bully dog) Original 1st Edition Artists Proof on Vellum, pencil signed, Edition limited to 150Please note this is NOT a restrike print - there are some selling an obvious restrike usually of a smaller format and often it has had color added and has been printed smaller, and so on. This is an original 1st Ed. Limited Edition of only 150, Artists Proof, pencil signed Herbert Dicksee. This piece is very hard to find on the market. There is only one other on Grosvener's at:http://www.grosvenorprints.com/stock.php?artist=Dicksee&WADbSearch1=Submit&cat_id=18&cat_select=197In general it is difficult to find any Dicksee signed 1st Ed. Limited Edition Artists Proof etching that is of a dog subject full head portrait or dog only - even the ones with another primary subject such as human or landscape that happen to have a dog in them are sought after, with the exception of one or two of the most commonly produced dog subjects, which are merely HTF.Images have glass reflection because we did not remove the back to photograph exposed surface - the surface of the etching is absolutely minimally expected aged (not visibly to the eye however) and is otherwise in superb shape. All Dicksee is fine but that this is a finer piece even for Dicksee is obvious at a glance. Indescribably intricate and perfect complex etching. Design is traditional.Note on the back appears to be from or near the time period of the piece, so the owner thought it to be a Boston Terrier / Boston Bull. This could be possible as that breed was created with about half Frenchie, and the Boston Bull breed was young then, some had the rounder Frenchie ears and were more bully in appearance, but on the market this piece is identified as a French Bulldog or just Bulldog subject. There was a lot of mixing bulldogs back then, so who knows. An exceptional superb piece in any case. Very hard to find, very fine original. All original, no restorations or repairs done nor needed.Size: approximately 24' x 20 " , strike image approximately 12"x9" (approx size of dog's etched head). Under glass (glare on photo). SHI reflects special care needed / professional art shipping and weight given glass.Sold "AS IS Where IS", no buyer's remorse returns. Please note that this is simply the same policy that any good auction house has. 3 days return money back ONLY at our discretion e.g. if we send you the wrong item etc. (very unlikely to happen - you'll be VERY pleased). We video tape / photo the packing for documentation in case you need to file for insurance. Insurance is required.
