Description
Rare Beer Stein Mettlach V&B Faience Style c.1840s The stein presented is extremely rare find. It does not show in "The Mettlach Book" by Gary Kirsner. I was not able to find it in my pile of beer stein catalogs from as far as 1990. None of the serious collectors ever heard of this type of Mettlach ware. However, this is an extremely interesteing and one of the earliest beer steins manufactured by Villeroy and Boch in Mettlach. The stein was made in 1840s and have the Villeroy and Boch incised mark that was in use from 1841 to 1855. It resemples faience beer steins manufactured in Germany from late 1700 till about 1840s. However it is not exactly faience - the clay is much heavier and stronger compare to the earthenware used for faience. It is almost vitrified and resembles stoneware. The glaze is white tin glaze - exactly the type used for faience for several centuries. The decorations are made with stencils - exactly the same technique used in very late faience production when manufacturer's tried to save money on hand-painted decorations. The pewter lid is very typical for the period with a hollow ball thumblift and closed hinge. In fact, the whole piece is very typical for the period and could be just one of a regular faience pieces if not for the very good quality and, of course, the Villeroy and Boch mark. The stein is in excellent condition. It has just very minor discoloraion of the white glaze, other that that there is no chips, cracks or repairs. The lid is in perfect shape with no dings, sitting very tight with a tight hinge. It is 9" tall, 1L capacity. Payment must be received within 10 days of the end of the auction. Please note: the term excellent flawless condition in case of an antique (about 100 year old) item means that there is no major flaws detected - like chips, cracks or repairs. It does not include the normal wear for the age unless stated otherwise. Return policy: I will make a full refund in case my description is significanly inaccurate (i.e. if I miss a damage or hidden repair or my dating is grossly inaccurate). I will take any item back for a credit on future purchases unconditionally. All refunds must be claimed within 10 days from the shipping date. Please look at my other items for sale!
