Description
JAMES WARE BRADBURY (1805-1901) MID 19th CENTURY UNITED STATES DEMOCRATIC SENATOR FROM MAINE! GRADUATE & PROFESSOR AT BOWDOIN COLLEGE, EDITOR OF THE "MAINE PATRIOT," & PRESIDENT OF THE MAINE HISTORICAL SOCIETY 1867-1887! Here's an 1853 Autograph Letter Signed by Bradbury with accompanying Free Frank Signature Cover - All accomplished in his hand! Bradbury writes to his friend, "Hon. C. G. Bellamy, Kittery, Maine" saying, "...with strength as you describe you ought to succeed. Be assured you will find me disposed to do for you my friend, all I should..."' The free franked cover bears a Washington D. C. FREE circular date stamp postmark. LOOKS MUCH NICER THAN THE SCANNED IMAGES The free franked cover and letter are in very good condition. J. M. Bradbury's signature is beautifully executed on both pieces. Nice addition to your Maine Political History Autograph & Manuscript Collection! Would look nice framed with a period engraving or photograph! <<<=== BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF THE HONORABLE JAMES WARE BRADBURY ===>>> BRADBURY, James Ware, United States Senator from Maine, born in Parsonsfield, York County, Maine, in 1805. He was graduated at Bowdoin in 1825, and, after teaching in the Hallowell, Maine, academy for a year (becoming principal), began the study of law, at different times partnering with Horatio Bridge, Lot M. Morrill, James W. Bradbury, Jr., (Bowdoin 1861) and others. He settled in Augusta, Maine, in 1830, where he was for a time editor of the "Maine Patriot," and was Kennebec county prosecuting attorney from 1834 till 1838. He was a member of the Baltimore convention of 1844, which nominated Polk for the presidency, and in 1847 was elected to the United States senate as a Democrat. He was a member of the judiciary committee throughout his tenure and Chairman of a select committee on French spoliations (1852). Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he returned, at the close of his term, to the practice of his profession. He has been corresponding secretary, and also president, of the Maine Historical Society, and served in that office until 1890. He also served as Bowdoin College Overseer (1850-1860) and Trustee during the Civil War. Bradbury married Eliza A. Smith of Augusta in 1834; they had four sons. He died in Augusta, Maine, January 6, 1901, and is interred in Forest Grove Cemetery. I am a proud member of the Universal Autograph Collectors Club (UACC), The Ephemera Society of America, the Manuscript Society & the American Political Items Collectors (APIC) (member name: John Lissandrello). I subscribe to each organizations' code of ethics and authenticity is guaranteed.
