WORN ONLY AT THE YEARLY TRIBAL GATHERING AT FOUMBOUM The northern Cameroon grasslands are composed of three ethnic groups with common ancestors.  These groups have closely related social structures.  From the 18th century on the groups of Chamba origin migrated through the plateaus and founded small states.  These communities ranging from 50 000 to 100 000 people spread over the southwest plateaus.  These settlers arrived between the 16th and 19th centuries.  They resisted slave raids with suicide or rebellion.  The Fon or individual King was the head of these communities and handled all judicial and regulatory activities as well as the sacred rituals for harvesting and planting, the royal hunt, war expeditions and the festivals of the dry season.  It was only when the Cameroon became a German colony that the King or Fon was forced to perform administration duties.
