Description
Los Angeles, CA '33 Earthquake, Search for Dead 9 RPPC Search This is a 1933 (DOPS stampbox), set of divided back, real photo postcards Showing the Long Beach Earthquake that Rolled Southern California with a 6.4 on the rect0r scale Even Though It Occured Off-Shore at the Newport-Inglewood Fault in the Pacific near Los Angeles, California (Los Angeles County). It happened on March 10, 1933. Most of the initial images show searches for dead. There are also life affirming images that follow. Many issues were dealt with shortly after this earthquake that caused $40 million dollars and lost 115 lives who were almost all killed by falling debris. So many schools were damaged, even though classes were not in session, that the Field Act of April 1933 was quickly passed to make all such structures earthquake-proof. Other areas of Los Angeles (Compton and Long Beach) were struck and military law was passed to protect citizens. This set of real photo postcards show that as well as the death toll and breadlines after the fact. You can also see the creamery (Long Beach) that fed the hungry. A GREAT set of images that are not usual and have social history. Why Special Olympics Michigan? My former husband, John, was bigger than life at 6'10" and had a heart and soul to match. One of his true passions was Special Olympics and the Michigan Tournament Finals. 100% of the proceeds from this auction will go to Special Olympics Michigan for the State Basketball Tournament Finals. This year they will be held in the caring, host community of Grandville, Michigan. The finals will be held from Friday, March 27th - Sunday, March 29th, 2009. Over 750 Michigan athletes and almost 1,000 volunteers will participate this year. The event is one that is sure to warm the heart and soul of everyone. Again, all the money raised will go towards Michigan athletes and stays in the state. A Michigan Family Story: “My brother has been a participant in Special Olympics Michigan most of his life. His favorite sport has always been basketball. Although, I have many great memories of watching my brother play basketball, my most memorable Special Olympics Michigan moment was provided by another athlete. It was during the State basketball tournament some years ago. My brother's team was playing in Grand Rapids; the home of the finals. One of the players on the opposing team was very challenged both physically and mentally. This individual had a difficult time following the flow of the game and may not have been able to tell you which basket he should be shooting at. Because of his ability, he didn’t get to play many minutes. When one of his teammates was fouled and injured while attempting a lay-up, the coach gave this challenged teammate the opportunity at the free throw line. The first attempt was a two-handed, between the legs, 30 feet high shot that didn’t come within 10 feet of the basket. The second attempt was the same two-handed, between the legs, 30 feet high shot except this shot saw ‘nothing but net.’ Everyone went absolutely nuts! The reaction was more pure joy than any Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Finals or Stanley Cup that I have ever seen. The crowd gave this young man a standing ovation and, for one day, this special athlete felt a sense of accomplishment, joy and elation that he had previously only been able to imagine.” David – Family Member This postcard set was not sent and is new and it is in excellent condition (8.0) and rates as readily available (1) in its collectible interest. Collector's Interest (Subjective): 5 - Rare = unidentifiable but the image can run from artistically pleasing to unprofessionally shot making it most likely to be one-of-a-kind. 4 - Uncommon = identifed by research only and has been verified through ancestry.com or other reliable sources of information. I never expected winning bidders to take longer than a week to contact us - however that was wrong. A non-paying bidder alert will be sent to all customers taking longer than seven days to inform me of payment intentions. Please understand I am sorry but, those few, have turned this from fun to collection practices. We do not want that for everyone so, again, take this for the minority. Anyone with a non-paying bidder alert sent to them will be blocked from further auctions. Shipping within the United States is a flat rate of $2.34. The postcards come in a new, rigid poly-pro sleeve that is placed in a bubble wrap envelope. Insurance is optional but encouraged for both domestic and worldwide shipping. For international rates, contact me ahead of time as the eBay calculator is not correct for Canada and the Americas. If you win, all rates appear but until then the highest rate possible is displayed. Outside of the Americas it might be correct, however, others CAN sent First Class Mail USPS with lower rates. Sorry for the headache. We are trying the Auctiva insurance and details will be sent to winning bidders. Their insurance allows door-to-door coverage in the United States and all foreign countries. This is a bonus for international bidders and one we are happy to offer. If the postcard arrives and is not in the condition or location listed in the auction, the buyer MUST return the item within seven days for a refund. I apologize to the majority of good buyers but one bidder has forced me to take this stance. They did not ask any questions before bidding and sent retalitory feedback. I work very hard to earn trust and value my intregrity. I do not enjoy watching that become wasted by someone who will not read my rules of sale. Please note, this does not include the cost of shipping to the buyer nor the amount to return the item by USPS. It must be shipped back in the same manner as received - new bubble envelope and poly-pro sleeve. PLEASE ASK BEFORE YOU BID ~ remember the bear in mind rule! ALSO, IF NON-PAYING BIDDER ALERT HAS BEEN SENT TO YOU BY ME - THE CARDS COME "AS IS" WITH NO REFUND. AGAIN, YOU WILL ALSO BE BLOCKED FROM BIDDING ON FUTURE AUCTIONS. I have been collecting and selling vintage postcards for more than two decades. That includes buying here on eBay. Therefore, our cards are sent out correctly in packages that will pass any insurance providers tests. That should assure you even without insurance that the card will arrive safely. If you complain about $2.34 shipping costs - move on to the next seller. There are plenty who will send the same quality postcards for less with cardboard, cut up USPS mail packets, or even in regular envelopes for free. PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE FROM ME IF YOU FEEL THE SHIPPING AND HANDLING FEE IS TOO MUCH. I want to make this a pleasent experience for you as a customer and me as a seller. Contact us if you have ANY QUESTIONS PRIOR TO BIDDING. No questions are silly and do not feel foolish sending any to us. All will be responded to in a timely manner. However, all bidders who ask questions AFTER purchasing will be blocked from future auctions. I call this my bear in mind rule.
