Thereafter, the Nathan Levy Company was taken over by the Ellis Group in 1968. It then changed its name and became Le Jacquard Français. The first collection was launched in 1978 in collaboration with the designer Primrose Bordier. Today, Le Jacquard Français has become the unchallenged reference for damask linen. Production Site Why Gérardmer? Flax was grown in the Vosges region from the earliest times. Women spun the flax and men wove the linen. After the cloths had been woven, they were washed in the water of the Gérardmer lake and bleached in the fields. Every household produced enough for its own sheets and shirts. With the invention of the spinning machine in 1850, the number of cloth mills at Gérardmer increased. The American Civil War (1860-1865) meant that cotton no longer reached Europe, and this contributed to the growth of linen production at Gérardmer. Today, Gérardmer is still an important production site for textiles. If the factory of Le Jacquard Français has been modernized since 1871, the place of production has never changed. ================================================ histoire du "Jacquard Français"   Installé à Gérardmer dans les Vosges en France, depuis 1888, par son fondateur Nathan Lévy, ce tissage, aprés sa destruction à la fin de la guerre de 1939/1945, a été reconstruit puis à nouveau remis en activité peu aprés. Les Etablissements Nathan Lévy furent ensuite repris par le groupe ELIS en 1968. Ils changent alors de nom et deviennent Le Jacquard Français La première collection est lancée en 1978 avec la collaboration de la styliste Primrose Bordier. Aujourd'hui, le Jacquard Français est devenu la référence incontestée du linge de maison en damassé.   Site de Production Pourquoi Gérardmer ?   Dans les temps anciens, on cultivait beaucoup de lin dans les Vosges. Les femmes filaient et les hommes tissaient.Grâce à l'eau du lac on lessivait les toiles tissées et on les blanchissait sur prés.Chacun produisait ce qui lui était nécessaire pour la confection de ses draps et de ses chemises. Vers 1850 avec l'arrivée de la machine à filer le lin, les tissages ont pris de l'expansion à Gérardmer. Avec la guerre de Sécession en Amérique (1860-1865) le coton n'arrive plus en Europe, ceci contribue beaucoup à l'expansion linière de Gérardmer. Aujourd'hui Gérardmer reste toujours un site de production important pour le textile.
