Description
WELCOME TO THE AUCTIONS OF MOMTHREWITAWAY! DESCRIPTION: Kayak II US Champion Racehorse Framed Print Wallace, Outstanding And Scarce Vintage Framed Color Print Of The Famous Racehorse Kayak II By Artist Wallace. The artist did an amazing and detailed job of capturing this beautiful horse. This print is not matted, it has an imprint boarder and is framed is a solid walnut frame. Artist signed Wallace 222 in pencil. There is a thick paper plaque on the papered back which reads: "Kayak II by Wallace".Kayak II (1935-19??) was an Argentine-bred Thoroughbred racehorse who competed successfully in the United States. He was sired by a famous Argentine Thoroughbred named Congreve out of the dam Mosquita. [1] After been seen by American Lindsay Howard during a polo trip to Argentina, Kayak was purchased for $7,000 along with another horse named Ligaroti. The two horses were shipped back to California where Howard's father, businessman Charles S. Howard, owned a successful racing stable that included 1938 U.S. Horse of the Year, Seabiscuit. Lin Howard and his partner in Binglin Stable, the singer Bing Crosby, raced Ligaroti while Charles Howard would race Kayak. To avoid a conflict of names, the horse had to be registered in the U.S. as Kayak II. Trained by Horatio Luro, he won 14 races and finished in the money in 23 of his 26 starts in the U.S. Substituting for injured stablemate Seabiscuit, Kayak II won the 1939 Santa Anita Handicap then finished second to Seabiscuit in the 1940 edition. In his other major 1939 race, Kayak II lost to Challedon in the 1939 Pimlico Special at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland.Kayak II was named the U.S. Champion Older Male Horse in 1939 in the earlier equivalent to today's Eclipse Awards.. SIZE: Frame measures just over 26 1/2" x 22 1/4" x 1". WEIGHT: Approx. 6.5 lbs.CONDITION: Very Good - Excellent. Please note the photos below show some slight reflections or haziness because of the glass in the frame. The color of the print is bright and strong, there are a few very light spots of soiling, foxing, or aging on the mid to upper left side of the plain boarder. The frame is very nice with a few blemishes on the on edges, some very, very tiny paint spots (these do pop off), nothing really too noticeable, just expectable wear. There is a small area of black paint? On the upper left corner, again not real noticeable. The papered back has a few slight punctures. Please contact us prior to bidding if you have any questions.UNITED STATES SHIPPING: Buyer agrees to pay domestic United States shipping and handling in addition to the winning bid, use the shipping calculator below.
