In the process, the Mata Ortiz artists polish their pieces with stones, seeds and bones; then they paint with hand made brushes using human hair (often they use the fine hair of their children) using pigments collected and ground in the area. Finally they fire the pots directly on the floor, using cottonwood barks or cow pats as fuel; (as well as in electric or gas kiln, in order to preserve nature). The result is a magnificent piece of ART ON CLAY. Not intended to use for food or beverages,        In this pottery town (a population of 2000 with about 400 potters) the master potter is JUAN QUEZADA . He began to rediscover the technique of the ancient Paquime Indians (or Casas Grandes) in the late 1970’s and now, his work is in museums and particular collections around the world.       Centuries ago, Paquimans traded their goods with other Native American Indians such as Zuni.
