SCOTT FITZGERALD (1896-1940). An American novelist and chronicler of the Jazz Age, Fitzgerald authored The Great Gatsby, Tender Is The Night, This Side Of Paradise, The Beautiful and the Damned and the unfinished The Great Tycoon. TLS. 1pg. 8 ½” x 11”. June 19 1939. Encino, California. A typed letter signed “Scott” to H.N. “Swanie” Swanson, his Hollywood agent. Fitzgerald wrote “Though this story was actually commenced before ‘Gone With The Wind’ was published, the Collier’s man told me it probably wouldn’t be scheduled before a couple of months so it had best be referred to as a new story, which in part it is. I have looked over the list of story needs you sent me and it doesn’t seem particularly to apply to any of them but perhaps will suggest something to you.” At this time, Fitzgerald, whose writings provided very little income, turned to film scripts to earn money. In January 1939, Fitzgerald did uncredited work on the screenplay of Gone With The Wind; this was the same month that David Selznick chose Vivien Leigh. In early 1939, Swanson got him an assignment for the film Winter Carnival for $1,250.00 a week, but that fizzled with Fitzgerald’s drinking. In the early summer of 1939, Fitzgerald completed the year’s first work of fiction; it was a Civil War story entitled “The End of Hate” that appeared in Collier’s. About the time this letter was composed, Fitzgerald began writing his unfinished final work, The Last Tycoon. This letter is not listed in Andrew Turnbull’s The Letters of F. Scott Fitzgerald. The letter has two small holes towards the bottom margin, but they affect nothing; the condition is very fine.
