Description
This is something pretty rare and extraordinary to find in this condition. You probably know that you're looking at an Emmerts patternmakers vise. What you probably do not realize is how rare this particular style really is! This is the smaller size of the two that they made. This was called a modelmakers or a patternmakers vise. It's 14" longs and the jaws are 5" high. I have had this one since 1992. It's been on a shelf stored away in my shop. It actually came from a very historic shop - M.P. Moller Organ Manufacturing, which was in Maryland, just a few miles from the PA border, where these vises were made in Waynesboro by Joseph Emmert himself starting in the late 1870's. I bought this at the auction along with a dozen or so of the larger style. I have been holding on to this one ever since. It's time for me to down-size and sell some of the treasures that I am not using. What also makes this a special Emmerts vise is that it's one of the earlier ones being that it has a turtle face or turtle back cover on the front. The casting date in it is August 11, 91. That would be 1891. The vise has 2 metal dogs that pop up on either vise face. These vises are a mechanical and artistic total work of art! They swivel out from their natural position, rotate up to be parrarel with your workbench and then it can spin 360 degrees - all referenced by a spring-loaded pin. The face of the vise can also be turned so it's completely vertical the 14" way. It also can be rotated upside-down where there are metal working jaws on the bottom. It's absolutely the most mechanical ingenious woodworking vise in the Universe! Believe me when I tell you that this vise is rare, rare, rare - not just because it's an Emmerts but also because of it's smaller size with a turtle face! In my entire patternmaking, woodworking and cabinetmaking career, which goes back to 1973, I have only seen 4 of these turtle face smaller size modelmakers Emmerts vises and I have 2 of them! Do your homework! Find another one! Let me know if you do! The front jaw also has an adjustment knob for angling the front jaw. This is for instrumentmakers or carvers to hold irregular-shaped pieces. These are an absolute dream to handcut dovetails, holding your stock while the jaws are in a vertical position. It places your pins and tails, maybe 6" above your benchtop. Phenomenal for all cabinetmaking projects! I have done nothing to this vise. It's in the same pristine antique condition as it was when I took it off a workbench in Maryland in 1992. Good history here! It's a little dusty and ready to go back to work for the next 100 years! By the way, you'll notice that it's complete with the bench mounting bracket and the notched arm that goes on the bottom of your bench. Most times you find the vise but not the all-important spring-loaded bracket with the adjusting bar. I am hoping this goes to a good home, to someone who appreciates and has been looking for the perfect woodworking vise. This is a solid investment and something that you will never lose your money on. If there's no interest here, I'm happy to pass it on to one of my grandchildren so bid early and make sure you're serious. This vise weighs in at someplace between 58 and 60 pounds. It will be boxed up very well, probably in a triple box. If you are the winning bidder, please wait to hear from us after the auction ends. I will take your address, have it weighed and get back to you with a shipping price. I do not wish to make any money on handling or packaging so you will only pay the actually shipping cost. That's pretty fair, don't you think? We shipped a couple of 50# boxes last year across the country. As I recall, it was around $48. Thank you for looking. Please email us with questions or comments and if you'd like to talk over the phone I am happy to do so.
