Th production of Schrezheim was well known fro the quality of faience itself and also for the superb quality of pewter - Scherzheim lids from 1700 and early 1800s are made to perfection. The stein is in a very rare condition - there are few minimal glaze flakes but no chips, cracks or hairlines. The lid is also in excellent condition - there is no repairs or any kind of damage, it is the original lid. The stein is decorated with floral motives very skilfully handpainted with red and gold over white tin glaze. This type of decorations is called "cold paint" because the paints were not fired. The "cold paint" was mostly exclusive to Schrezheim - I know of some glass pieces with cold paint but never any faience piece other than Schrezheim. The cold paint over white glaze is quite rare. Most of the beer steins decorated this way was done over blue-glazed faience. Also, because of the nature of the cold paint it was worn-off very easily. I have seen steins of this kind where the paint was complitely worn out with just a few tiny specks left. This one ishows some wear but in fact the decorations are in a very good shape compare to the rest of this kind of ware. The top of the lid is inscripted with the original owner's name - A.M.Beckin. It is dated 1801. That means the stein was made no later that this date - it was quite common to engrave beer stein lids long after the stein was purchased. Please note - this is the real date, the stein is 100 original from the period! The stein has a foot ring also in perfect flawless condition. The bottom is marked mark made with the white glaze but I was unable to read it. It is 10" tall to the top of the thumblift, approx. 1L capacity.
