DESCRIPTION: This is the finest specimen of this species that I have ever seen, so I am thrilled to be offering it. This stunning skate measures 4.25 inches long and is highly desirable because the positive and negative plates preserve all of the details of the specimen. Typically a pair like this would be sold separately because it is more profitable to the dealer. But in the interest of my clients I will first offer it as a pair. But if it remains unsold for more than two months, I will then offer them separately. Some preparers will darken the specimen with dyes and other colorants. This is not necessarily a bad thing as long as it is revealed to the buyer. For this specimen, no colorants have been applied -- not even at the junction where the (inevitably) broken slab pieces were joined back together. The Hjoula limestone formation where this specimen was excavated is well stratified. Its strata inclines downward 25 ~ 50 degrees to the west, but inclination is highly variable both in angle and direction; in addition, stratification is very irregular, as many micro-faults are present, and curved strata are often present. Chert is present in lenses and nodules, varying from few centimeters to 50 cm or more in diameter without concentric structure, often of irregular shape. The thickness of lamination is also variable from a few millimeters to 50 cm, although the thickest strata are usually sterile (without fossils). The color is also variable from a pallid yellow to a brown-beige, to grey to near black. It is impossible to obtain very large slabs because the laminations of the richest strata are distorted and cherty deposits are frequent. COMPARABLES: Premium specimens of this size and quality typically sell for $1,000 ~ $1,500 per plate. (This auction is for *both* plates.) You can occasionally find them online in smaller and/or lower quality condition. Here’s one for $750 that is in poorer condition. Here’s one that measures a mere 1.4 inches long for $495. Here’s another tiny one for $1,195 equivalent. And yet another in vastly poorer condition for $650. Here’s the best one that I could find on the internet, but it still isn’t as nice as mine, for $695. So while lesser specimens range in price between $495 and $1,195 mine is better than all of them.
