Description
citroenlady store DECO SILVER FULL VANITY SET, BOXED BY HARRODS 1937 Search My Mother-in-Law died 18 months ago at the grand age of 101.  She left me her jewellery (by the box load!) and this beautiful dressing table set which she bought in 1936 at Harrods.  Some of it, quite simply, has to go.I already have an Art Nouveau set handed down from my family and there are no daughters (or granddaughters) to hand it down to and so I have decided to sell it.First of all let me tell you that each piece of this beautiful solid silver blue guilloche set was made by G.S. & Co Ltd., a large business of retail jewellers and silversmiths established in 1880 at 112 Regent Street, London. The original partners were William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman. In 1898 the firm converted into a limited liablity company under the style Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd. The firm was amalgamated in 1952 in Garrard & Co Ltd. and each piece is individually marked with the maker's marks and full hallmarks as follows:The mirror: London 1937The comb London 1937One hairbrush London 1936One hairbush London 1937One small brush London 1937One small brush London 1937The whole set was boxed by Harrods, and the logo is placed discreetly underneath the mirror and is only visible when that is removed from the case. The photographs will show that all pieces are present.  The case is beautifully lined in ivory velvet and still retains the velvet protector that rests  over the set, just underneath the cover of the box.  This is a top quality set, make no mistake, and the blue guilloche is in my opinion the most attractive of all the colour range.  It is still vibrant and oozes quality.  This must have cost a small fortune when it was new!  Please also note this is not one of the usual 3-piece sets that flood the market; here we have two hairbrushes, two clothes brushes (one more finely bristled than the other) apart from the mirror and comb. You will also see from the photographs that the bottom of the box is hinged - another sign of qualilty - so that when the box is opened every part of the suite can be accessed with perfect ease.  Each hinge and clasp is as firm and sound as the day it was made. The metal clips that hold the mirror in place have some little spots of rust showing through the velvet now which is hardly surprising after 70 years! One hairbrush shows wear to the guilloche enamel which hasn't been damaged as such; just worn through daily use over 70 years.  In the same way the comb is missing several teeth, but I understand the combs can be replaced. This one is marked "British Make Sawcut".  The brushes are marked "Pure Bristle" as well. The mirror is in good condition - the glass is bevelled - showing only one or two miniscule spots that are apparent under close inspection.I have actually taken 45 photographs of this set but am having horrendous problems with my broadband connection that keeps dropping so please scroll right to the end of this listing because I will add the rest as and when I can!  In the meantime, please supersize these images that have been taken in high resolution and examine them carefully, remembering that any minor imperfection will probably look enormous in them!My Mother-in-Law came from a well-heeled family and was naturally used to quality items.  This beautiful vanity set was no exception to that rule. The first photographs capture the true vibrancy of the guilloche far more successfully then the close-ups which were, by necessity, taken under artificial light on a very dull day.If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to email.  I am friendly and approachable and am usually able to answer queries very quickly.I will add shipping prices later but please bear in mind that this is a heavy item and will be expensive to post and I won't do that without insurance.  For obvious reasons I am unable to combine shipping on this particular item, but am about to list a matching little blue guilloche ring pot - internet allowing!WHAT A FANTASTIC CHRISTMAS PRESENT THIS WOULD MAKE FOR ANY LADY OF TASTE, WHO APPRECIATES QUALITY!I do not trade outside of eBay, so please don't ask me to do that.GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY BIDDING!
