Description
Consolidated B-24 Liberator ashtray. Am helping a widow of a guy who worked at Consolidated during the war. This is a pretty cool item, but it has been worked on over the years. Looks like the ashtray has been painted with a bronze color paint. The B-24 looks to me like it has NOT been touched. The hardware that holds it together is newer. But again, the B-24 is in great shape. All props are okay. Also note that this is an older, short nose Liberator. So the ashtray and model were produced early on, maybe before the war started. No markings that I can see. Ashtray is 8 inches across, about 7 inches high to the tail of the plane. Wingspan is 7-1/2 inches across. Feel free to contact me with questions. (Sorry, it's got a pretty good coat of dust on it). Please note: This item is being sold "as is". A history note. This Liberator model appears to be a Liberator II built in small numbers for the British early in the war. It was to be equipped with a Boulton-Paul four-gun upper power turret once it arrived in England, but at least one example was built in San Diego with the turret, AL-503. This plane took off from Lindbergh Field, San Diego, with Consolidated chief test pilot William B. Wheatley and others aboard. A loose bolt jammed the elevator control in the up position and the aircraft stalled into San Diego Bay killing all aboard. (1 June 1941)
