Description
BENEDICT ARNOLD ORDERS SUPPLIES TO AID THE REVOLUTIONARY CAUSE JUST AFTER THE BATTLE OF TICONDEROGA BENEDICT ARNOLD (1741-1801). The most notorious American traitor, Arnold fought in the French and Indian War and enlisted after Lexington. He captured Fort Ticonderoga and its ordnance there before moving onto Quebec. He was promoted to brigadier general and was wounded at Saratoga. Unhappy financially, sensitive and miffed that he was passed over for promotion, Arnold planned to turn over West Point to the British for a large sum of money. By accident, a British officer, John Andre, was captured by American soldiers and the plot was revealed. Arnold fled, then fought for the British in Virginia and his home state of Connecticut. In 1781, he sailed for England and later moved to Canada and the West Indies. He was a social outcast and his business attempts were largely unsuccessful. DS. 1pg. 5 ¼” x 2 ¾”. June 13, 1775. No Place. A document signed “Approved B. Arnold” by Benedict Arnold, regarding the purchase of planks: “Received twenty five Hundred feete [sic] Boards.” The document is also signed “Collin Mackenzie”. According to an archivist at Fort Ticonderoga, the referred to boards were either meant to build cannon carriages or for the repair of the Fort. 1775 was a very busy and important year for Arnold and the American Revolution. Arnold and his infantry had successfully captured Fort Ticonderoga only a month before this document was written. In June 1775, the Continental Army was finally established and Arnold prepared for an invasion of Canada orchestrated by Major General Philip Schuyler. Although the writing is a little faint and there is staining and toning throughout, the document is in very good condition with a dark autograph. Pieces by Arnold written before his treason are a very rare find. TERMS AND CONDITIONS My name is Stuart Lutz and I am a full time dealer of autographs, letters, documents and historic manuscripts.
