Description
A GIANT APOLLO 13 SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH INSCRIBED TO THE QUARANTINE DOCTOR (APOLLO 13). Apollo 13 was supposed to be the third lunar landing, and it was launched on April 11, 1970. The crew consisted of James Lovell, Jack Swigert and Fred Haise; Ken Mattingly was originally supposed to be in the crew but was replaced when he was allegedly exposed to rubella. Two days after launch, the Service Module’s oxygen tank exploded, threatening the life of the crew. They retreated to the Lunar Module where they waited in the cold until they returned to Earth. PS. 21” x 25”. No date [circa 1970]. No place. A photograph signed “James Lovell”, “Jack Swigert” and “Fred W. Haise” on the top mount. The image is inscribed "To Bennie C. Wooley, Best Wishes from the Apollo XIII crew”; Wooley who was head of the preflight health stabilization program and the post-flight lunar quarantine program. The actual image measures 15.5" wide by 19" high and the entire frame is 21" x 25". There is a light waterstain along the bottom margin, and it is most pronounced in the lower right corner, but it is on the mat and does not touch the image. The large color image is slightly washed out (similar to many 1970s color images) and the signatures are a touch light, though the inscription is dark. This is probably one of the largest Apollo 13 photographs in existence and has a fine inscription.
