Description
mightygrip Store For your consideration is an important historic collection of Southwest Indian material comprised of 32 Original Paintings by Kiowa Artist Stephen Mopope. Each painting is museum framed with archival backing and under glass for proper preservation. Here is a photograph of one of the pieces in the framing. Please be aware that the special glass will not allow the camera to capture the actual colors, which are quite vibrant and rich. Framed Size for all are 16" x 20" so the collection is consistent in size when being displayed. Please see list below for individual measurements of each piece of art. This collection was originally formed by a Connecticut collector, Princess Evangeline Salstem-Zalessky during extended visits to Taos and Santa Fe during the 1920’s and early 1930’s. In 1954, the collection was sold to Emily Hall Tremaine for THE METEOR CRATER VISITOR CENTER MUSEUM in northern Arizona. The Tremaine family also owned the BAR T BAR Ranching interest where the Meteor Crater is located. This group of Steven Mopope paintings was displayed at the museum for many years and was considered one of the best acquisitions for the BAR T BAR collection. The collection was acquired by the present owner in the early 1990’s. This collection of 32 paintings has remained intact for all these years, and is in virtually pristine condition. All of the works, most of which are dated, were painted between 1929 and 1932. This was a time when Mopope was just learning the scope and possibilities of his talents. Of Santa Fe, New Mexico: “In the late 1920’s, at much the same time as Dorothy Dunn was encouraging a flourishing of Native American painting in Santa Fe at the Indian school, a similar occurrence was taking place in Oklahoma. First in Anadarko at the U.S. Indian Service, and subsequently, beginning in 1927, at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, under the influence of Professor of Art, Oscar B. Jacobson, young Kiowa students were encouraged to take brushes and paints to paper and utilize the wealth of their traditional heritage in artistic expression. Jacobson and his faculty provided technical advice and critical suggestion to the Kiowa students, but insisted that the youths paint from their unique perspectives and individual visions. Almost immediately, there was national and international acclaim for the KIOWA FIVE, as this original group of Kiowa painters was called. In the summer of 1928 their paintings were exhibited in Prague at the International Congress of prints: KIOWA INDIAN ART, Watercolor Paintings in Color by the Indians of Oklahoma, was published in France. Oscar Jacobson provided the introductory text. In succeeding years, the artists of the KIOWA FIVE have had many more opportunities for exhibition. In varying degrees, the artists’ careers developed and flourished. Today, their works are found across the nation in museums, as well as in private art collections. In the fall of 1993, the Bar T Bar Ranch collection of Stephen Mopope paintings was exhibited at The Jacobson Foundation in Norman, Oklahoma. The opportunity for Stephen Mopope paintings to return to their place of origin after an odyssey of some sixty years, was a significant and interesting development.” Below are the titles, dates and image size (in inches) of the paintings.
