Description
2 Real Photo Postcards Civil War Soldiers This is a pair of real photo postcards that are as close as one can get to actual postcards from the Civil War. One shows a man as he looked in 1911 along side the same man’s portrait in Union uniform in 1861 complete with rifle. The messages included on these two postcards is invaluable and written in the hand of a Civil War veteran. It says: "Lincoln, Neb. Sept. 15 - 1911. Fifty years ago today my oldest Bro & I enlisted in the Eng Reg of the West Mo Val. My Bro had just served 3 months in the 1st Iowa Infty. My youngest Bro enlisted in ‘62 in the 30th Iowa Infty. He was killed in battle at Vicksburg May 22 - 63. My oldest Bro died a few years after he was discharged from the service on acct of sickness. Charles Shedd." Sent to Mrs. James Taylor in Oskaloosa, Iowa. The second postcard shows a uniformed portrait of George Curtis Shedd at age 19. Color Corp. 30th Iowa Infantry. The message written on the card, again in the hand of Charles Shedd reads: "Lincoln, Neb May 22 - 1913. My dear Niece Helen. Fifty years ago today your uncle George was killed at Vicksburg. He was only 19 years old but a brave soldier. One ball passed thro his heart another thro his hips as they were charging up a steep hill. Affly (affectionately) Uncle Charles. Both are sent to the same recipient and both are postally used. Both are in very good condition with some album paper residue on the reverse. The diaries of Civil War veterans have brought thousands of dollars at auction and these actually should be in a museum. Here is a brief, but rare account of the lives of a group of brothers who served their country during our nations darkest time pictured on real photo postcards produced (and post marked) on the 50th anniversary dates of specific events by the sole surviving brother. An absolute TREASURE that should never have left the hands of the family.
