Each one of these beads is made by making a base shape out of powder glass or powder glass and a filler. Then this is fired in small open ovens. Then, the designs are added very laboriously by using spit, powder glass and a needle and fired again. These are traditionally worn as individual beads tied in the hair or as small groups in bracelets. Kiffa making is a lost art. These are old beads which are no longer being made in this fashion and very sought after and collectable. Most Kiffas today are in private collections.
