GEORGE DRAGON BRASS RIZA' Description YOU ARE BIDDING ON A LARGE AND RARE RUSSIAN ORTHODOX LATE -19 CENTURY ICON IN BRASS RIZA DEPICTING MOUNTED ST. GEORGE SLAYING THE DRAGON. Description: A beautiful fully painted St. George is depicted as a mounted knight who is slaying a dragon beneath the horse freeing the city and saving King's daughter. This image was the most beloved in Russia as a symbol of a grace and beauty triumphing over evil. The inscription in old Cyrillic on the top border says: "Miracle of St. George and the Dragon." The description on the bottom border of the riza "Holy Great Martyr St. George the Victory-Bearer," indicates that this riza was most likely of military origin (i.e. was specifically made to be presented to an officer or a regiment). The hand hammered repousse brass riza is of extreme beauty with gorgeous floral borders in Pan-Slavic style popular in Russia at the end of the XIX century. The spear made from a separate brass rode which gives the icon additional 3-dimensional look. The brass halo (also made as a separate piece) is decorated with five faux diamod-like stones. St. George was a patron saint of Russia, appearing as a part of the Russian Coat of Arms, and, in addition was a patron saint of the Russian Imperial Army. Measurements: 54 cm x 44 cm (21 1/4 in x 17 3/8 in ) Materials: Wooden board painted with tempera with velvet backing and brass risa cover. Marks: unmarked. Condition: Superb original condition, minor patina and cosmetic scratches on the riza . Very minor damage to the top of the horse's head (as show) which is not noticeable when the icon is hung.
