Description
Powered by Auction Hawk 1931 Chicago Illinois - VERY RARE ITEM !!!! You are bidding on a very rare piece of Chicago history: a booklet entitled "This Week in Chicago, January 11, 1931". This booklet was distributed to visitors to the Windy City and included information about entertainment, dining, hotels, shopping, conventions and tourist activities. During this week in Chicago, (1) Ed Wynn was starring in Ziegfeld's musical comedy "Simple Simon" at the Grand Opera House; (2) Johnny Hamp and his orchestra were performing for dinner and supper dances at the Congress Hotel; (3) Leslie Howard was starring in "Berkeley Square" at the Sel Wyn; and (4) the "Queen of America's Night Club" Evelyn Nesbit was singing at the Club Alabam, to mention only a few attractions. The Chicago Civic Opera was offering seats for $1.00. And dining at the famous Blackhawk Restaurant was $2.00 for the fixed-price menu. Gus Mann's Rainbo Sea Food Grotto (whose motto was "If it swims, we have it") was offering a $1.50 full course meal. This booklet offers 36 pages of nostalgia for the collector of Chicagoland memorabilia. In addition to pages of advertisements from local businesses and entertainment options, the publication has a centerpage 2-page map of Chicago, showing rapid transit lines of the Chicago, North Shore & Milwaukee Railroad, the North Shore Line; there is also information about trains of the South Shore Line and the Chicago, Aurora & Elgin Railroad. The booklet has a map of the Chicago Loop, noting the locations of theaters, hotels, stores, rail stations and principal buildings. There is a listing and thumbnail descriptions of famous Chicago "Wonder Spots", which as the Shedd Aquarium, the Adler Planetarium, the Water Tower, and the Navy Pier. It includes a listing of Chicago conventions, meetings and clubs; church services; Loop hotels; travel information for rail, bus and air; cafes and caberets; even a table that tells you how long it takes for air mail letters to reach other cities (next day service was promised to Los Angeles). This item has much more information for the Chicago nostalgist. The cover shows a picture of State Street, over 75 years ago. The booklet measures appx 9x5 inches unopened and is printed on glossy paper stock. It is in EXCELLENT CONDITION and appears to have been used seldom if ever. It has no writing or markings, no tears or rips, no spills or smears, and all pages are firmly affixed to the center spine. You could look a long time and not find another copy of this booklet, let alone in this top condition. It would make a great stocking stuffer for the Chicago history buff.                   Shipping & Handling Payment Shipping: $1.51Insurance: $1.70 (optional)1st class shipping cost provided.
