Description
Wiley Post and Harold Gatty. LEGENDARY PILOT WHO ENVISIONED AND PROVED THE EXISTENCE OF THE JET STREAM. An historic signed cover, carried aboard the Winnie Mae on the 1931 around-the-world flight, signed by both Post and navigator Harold Gatty and postmarked in Mineola, Berlin and Moscow, June-July, 1931. A-2006 Post: (1899-1935). A former oilfield roustabout; flying a Lockheed Vega 5, tour no. 32, he placed seventeenth in the 1929 Edsel B. Ford Reliability Tour; Lockheed contrat test pilot on the Vega; first place in the Los Angeles-Chicago Derby at the 1930 National Air races at Chicago IL flying a Lockheed; with Australian navigator Harold Gatty he made an around-the-world flight of 15,474 miles in 8 days 15 hours 51 minutes in his "Winnie Mae" (1931); made a solo around-the-world flight of 15,596 miles in the same aircraft in 7 days 18 hours 49 minutes 30 seconds. His aircraft had on board a not-yet-in-production Sperry Gyroscopic automatic pilot and an Army-loaned ADF (1933); recipient of the Harmon International Trophy for outstanding achievement in the arts and sciences of aeronautics for his world flight(1933); recipient of the Harmon International "National" Trophy for outstanding achievement in the arts and sciences of aeronautics in the United States (1933); recipient of the Gold Medal of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale for his contribution to the development of aeronautics (1933/34); Post was sure aviation's future was in the stratosphere and after a number of attempts, wearing a crude pressure suit and with "Winnie Mae's" engine supercharged, he made the first use of the jet stream, flying from California to Cleveland at 340 mph groundspeed, almost twice the Vega's top airspeed (1935); killed in a takeoff from Point Barrow, Alaska in a Lockheed Orion-Explorer floatplane during an attempted around-the-world flight with passenger Will Rogers (1935); Wiley Post/Will Rogers Airport in Barrow AK and Will Rogers/Wiley Post Memorial Airport, Renton WA honor the memory of Post and humorist Rogers. Gatty: Attempting to fly a great-circle route from Japan to the U. S. in the City of Tacoma, he and LT Harold Bromley were forced to turn back after flying 1250 miles, landing in northern Honshu in a leper colony (1930); he accompanied Wiley Post on his historic 1931 around-the-world flight in the Winnie Mae. (Cdr., USN.). This is part of my personal collection of over 2500 aviation autographs dating from the very earliest days of aviation. The collection includes many, many air mail pilots, record holders, aviation personalities, military/naval aviators from 1914 through Vietnam, etc. Ill also be including about 1000 autographs from a group my mother and father collected during the late twenties, thirties and just before WWII. My auction and "store" sales are United States only but I do make exceptions for Canadian and most European buyers. To assure a valid USPS receipt Canadian and European photos and autographs are mailed by International Priority Mail in Flat Rate envelopes protected from bending and weather. P&H to Canada is $12.00 for any number of photographs and/or autographs and $14.00 to most Eurpoean destinations.
