Description
VERY Rare    HUGE Letter Archive     of   Listed American Artist       Leopold Seyffert  (1887-1956)     1930s     217 pieces       For offer, a very rare letter archive of a well know and listed American artist! Fresh from a prominent estate in Upstate New York. Vintage, Old, Original - NOT Reproductions - Guaranteed !! Unique collections such as this do not show up very often on the marketplace, mainly because such collections are often found in large university collections, or they were destroyed. This archive is exceptional, and offers a rare glimpse into the life of one of America's important portrait painters of the 20th century. Leopold Seyffert, who studied with William Merritt Chase, is known for his portraits of famous celebrities, military figures, and others of his time. Perhaps most famous, is his portrait of General Pershing. He also did portraits of musicians - Fritz Kreisler, Leopold Stokowski, Joseph Hoffman, and many others. He won numerous awards throughout his prolific life, and his works are in many collections throughout the United States, including the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., Harvard University, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum, Chicago Art Institute, and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts to name a few. He exhibited at the Panama Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915, and was constantly commissioned to do portraits for members of the White House, including a possible work of President Herbert Hoover.  The archive is mainly from the files of Max Safron, of Saint Louis, Missouri, who was Seyffert's agent for many years. Chiefly unresearched, this archive is worthy of further work. There are a total of 217 pieces in the archive, which includes 39 autograph manuscript letters signed, ( ALS ) from Seyffert (many letters are more than one page - approx. 53 pages of writing), 85 other letters, which are mainly tissue-paper copy letters responding back to Seyffert from Safron and others (letters from President Herbert Hoover about possible portrait; one letter is from Daniel Longwell, founding editor for Life Magazine, who mentions they may use some of Seyffert's works in the magazine - letter is signed by Longwell), and 9 telegrams from Seyffert. Some of the letters to Seyffert are not on tissue-type paper, and are signed (some from Saffron and others). The archive also includes other ephemeral items, such as a few programs for gallery shows (including an exhibition he did at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington), newspaper clippings, a photograph of a portrait he did, receipts, shipping receipts, and other items. There is much important content  in the archive, including correspondence related to his most famous work of General Pershing. Surely this archive is a rich ground for biographical information on this artist. Much detail are in these letters. Please see photos below. NOTE: Items look better than shown in photos below and there is MUCH MORE! If you collect 19th / 20th century fine art, Americana art or artists, biography, art history, etc., this is a treasure and one you will not see again! Add this to your bibliophile library or paper / ephemera collection. Important genealogy research importance too. Winning bidder pays 14.50 s/h in U.S. + insurance. Combine shipping on multiple bid wins! Insurance is extra, international s/h is more.  No reserve. Good luck bidding.  Click the button to see my other items->->
