ENJOY! Knowledgeable baseball fans from every era agree that the greatest shortstop of all-time was John Peter "HONUS" Wagner. When the first five men were elected into Baseball's Hall Of Fame in 1936, Honus Wagner received equal votes with Babe Ruth as the top vote-getters to be immortalized. There has never been a more genuine, honest, decent, and beloved ballplayer than Honus Wagner. Despite his awesome talents, he remained modest and friendly throughout his playing career and even afterwards. No other shortstop has ever combined offensive and defensive excellence the way he did. He was a superb fielder with large, strong hands and a rifle of an arm. John McGraw once stated, "The only way to get a ball past Honus is to hit it at least eight feet over his head." Wagner was extraordinarily fast on the basepaths, leading his league in stolen bases five times. Three times he stole second, third, and home in a single inning. As a hitter, he ranks among the top 20 All-Time in six different categories. He was an extremely versatile athlete as proven by his successful barnstorming tours off-season as a professional basketball player. During his first season with Pittsburgh in 1900, Honus won his first batting title and played right field, third base, second base, and first base. He also hurled three scoreless innings as a pitcher. In 1901, he became the Pirate shortstop for good and led the team to three consecutive pennants. From 1903 to 1909, Wagner led the National League in hitting seven times and came in second once. He won four slugging titles and led the league in on-base percentage four times, stolen bases three times, RBIs twice, triples twice, doubles five times, and hits and runs once each. In 1908 Wagner was only two home runs shy of a Triple Crown. Total Baseball's Total Player Ratings rank him first in the entire Major Leagues every year from 1903 through 1909. Wagner's decade ranks with the performances of Rogers Hornsby and Babe Ruth during the 1920's as the greatest offensive ten-year spans in Major League Baseball history. Honus drove in six runs in the 1909 World Series against Ty Cobb's Detroit Tigers. Wagner hit .333 to Cobb's .231 and the Pirates handed Detroit their third consecutive World Series defeat. Honus won another batting title in 1911 and drove in 102 runs in 1912 to lead all NL hitters in that category at age 38. He was the first player to have his name engraved on a Louisville Slugger bat and the first player to amass 3,000 hits (records have since shown Cap Anson retired with 2,995). During his career he won eight batting titles, led the league in doubles eight times, and finished with more triples than any other player in the league. He shares the record with Stan Musial and Babe Ruth of leading the league in extra-base hits seven times. He ranks seventh all-time for hits (3,415), eighth in doubles (640), tenth in stolen bases (722), and 13th in at-bats (10,430). He is also in the top twenty for games played, total bases, RBIs, and runs scored. He has the highest career batting average of any shortstop at .327 and only one other shortstop stole more bases. Total Baseball's Total Player Rating ranks him ninth among all players lifetime. Even after retiring from Pittsburgh in 1917, Honus still swung the bat. At age 52 he hit a dramatic home run to win a semipro game. In 1933 at age 59, he played in an old-timer's game and handled seven chances perfectly firing out runner's at every base and one at home. He was a coach with the Pirates for 18 years soon thereafter and still would inspire awe with his turns at batting practice. There was a famous story which has been proven false about the 1909 World Series. As the story goes, Ty Cobb, taunting Wagner from first with insults, threatened to spike Honus in an attempted steal of second base and Wagner, catching the throw from the catcher, tagged Cobb so hard in the mouth that some teeth were knocked loose and the wound required stitches. In truth, Cobb had great respect for Honus Wagner and in his own autobiography says, "Spike Honus Wagner? It would have taken quite a fool-hardy man." Cobb also claimed Wagner as the greatest shortstop to ever play the game. Ed Barrow, Bill Klem, Sam Crawford, John McGraw, and Branch Rickey all saw the best over the course of their many years and every one of them named HONUS WAGNER as the greatest player baseball has ever seen.
