This flag has the makers mark of, American Ensign, 20 Ft., Patented April 26th, 1870. Down below the makers mark is written Nov. 10, Sherwood Housekeeper, which I think will place this at the Sherwood Inn in New York. On the other side of the spine is written in ink, Louise Kennedy 1891. I believe this is a transitional flag as the stars are not the sewn on type but actually printed on the linen type material. Notice how big, compare the $1.00 bill to the stars and stripes. This measures right at 20 feet long and is aprx. 9 feet 5 inches wide. This flag will date to 1890 and has some writing on the spine of the flag. The 42 star flag was never an Official flag, as the flag companies did NOT know that Idaho was becoming a state untill July 3rd of 1890. So, the flag companies had to make the 43 star flag to be the official flag. Notice along the spine of the flag are 4 large brass rings and then along the top are 16 small brass rings sewn to the fabric. Notice that there have been some repairs made to this flag and that there are also some moth holes in the flag. Still a great historic flag in any condition and especially being this size. This FLAG is an original and NOT a reproduction. A very nice and extremely scarce estate flag. We apologize for laying this flag on the ground to photograph it, but we had nothing large enough to lay underneath it.
